Garden Court South Beach boasts a modern look following a R22 million refurbishment Garden Court South Beach, one of Durban’s landmark beachfront hotels, has undergone a multi-million rand refurbishment- an investment which has revived the 42-year-old property.  The R22 million investment has made way for the remodel of the hotel’s public areas including upgrades to elevators, public bathrooms and the reception area as well as a R12 million soft refurbishment of its 414 guest rooms.  “When planning this refurbishment, we focussed on breathing new life into the property through modernisation and a fresh look while still building on the comfort and attention to detail that guests have come to value at the hotel ,” said Garden Court South Beach GM Wayne Smith. NEDERBURG SHOWS FIVE DECADES OF ITS RED STAR, CABERNET SAUVIGNON Nederburg recently showcased a line-up of venerable Cabernet Sauvignon wines to selected guests in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Razvan Macici, cellar-master at Nederburg for 15 years, presented some of the cellar's prized vintages, beginning with a 1966. He closed with the Nederburg II Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, awarded a double gold medal at the 2015 Veritas Awards, and featured a Cabernet from every decade in between. While most of the wines were made by the legendary Günter Brӧzel, who was Nederburg's cellar-master for 33 years, from 1956 to 1989, Macici's wines were clear evidence that he had picked up the baton from the man he still considers one of his mentors. (Brӧzel still pops into the cellar from time to time for a catch-up with the team). On 12 December 2015, concerned citizens of South Africa and environmental groups will gather at various Builders Warehouse location points, across the country to demand that the household herbicide “Roundup” be removed from their outlets nationally. The campaign will also use this gathering to create awareness around the dangers of Roundup, highlighting the negative effects of its use on both the health of citizens and the extensive damage it causes to the environment. The group will also call for the Department of Agriculture to look into the matter, and to acknowledge these demands. COINS COMMEMORATE THE CREATION OF THE  COUNTRY’S FIRST COINAGE 02, December 2015 - The South African Mint (SA Mint), a wholly owned subsidiary of The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has launched a new range of coins to commemorate 200 hundred years of the Griqua Town coin. The coin was originally created as currency for the people of Griqua Town in 1815 - the first local currency of a South African people. The numismatic coin range follows the announcement of the upcoming R5 commemorative currency coin which will be issued by t he South African Reserve Bank (SARB) i n 2016. The new Griqua Town R5 will be a regular legal tender coin, holding the same value and equal to the existing R5 coins that are currently in circulation throughout the country. The new R5 coin will therefore not hold any special or superior value to existing R5 coins.
