Sandwich Baron offers a healthy Banting choice Sandwich Baron, South Africa’s fastest growing sandwich franchise, has added a wide and delicious range of ‘Banting’ meals to its menu. While Banting is a growing health trend, Sandwich Baron understands that people have different dietary requirements which is why they offer an extensive menu with healthy and hearty meals. “Knowing there is a growing market for healthy options, and that everybody loves a decent sandwich, we had to bring out a Sandwich Baron Banting Bar. We made it convenient for everyone to enjoy an authentic Banting sandwich every now and again without having to cheat!” says Sally J’Arlette-Joy, founder of Sandwich Baron. Sandwich Baron chose to develop a Banting menu recognising its health benefits – it is much more than a weight-reduction plan. It primarily addresses the modern scourge of diabetes. It is no flash in the pan, but is arguably the oldest eating plan first prescribed in 1861 by a Har
The Gold Reef City theme park, located in central Johannesburg, is built around an authentic 19th century gold mine, and brings together fascinating historical attractions with some of the most thrilling rides in the southern hemisphere. For a day of frenetic family fun, it cannot be beat. Did you know? Gold Reef City has a 96-seater 4-D theatre with hydraulic seats that emits a range of scents and smells to match what's happening on screen. Walking in to the theme park at Gold Reef City is like stepping in to another world. Built around an authentic 19th century gold mine, the park successfully combines an old-world museum atmosphere with some of the wildest rides south of the equator. It is this combination of attractions that makes this Gold Reef City entertainment park such a huge hit with families. Vredefort Dome Vredefort Dome − imagine an asteroid the size of Table Mountain heading for Earth at a speed of 20km per second. Packing more punch than multiple nuclear bombs, it penetrates 17km deep into the Earth and leaves an impact crater so large it’s been declared a World Heritage Site. Did you know? Another crater impact site, the Tswaing meteorite crater, is located outside Pretoria. Thankfully the meteorite collision that formed the Vredefort Dome happened a long time ago, more than two-million years back, before life as we know it. In its wake, pulverised rock powder rained down on the Earth for months, blotting out the sun. But, curiously, scientists speculate that the incident may have increased the planet's oxygen levels to the point of making life possible. The cataclysmic event left behind the Vredefort Dome, a South African World Heritage Site. You'll come upon the dome near the Free State town of Parys, where the meteorite, some 10
Plant conservation in the Richtersveld   The Richtersveld World Heritage Site has become famous since it was declared in 2007. Less well known is the Richtersveld Community Conservancy that preceded it. The uniquely hardy plants in this arid region underpin an ancient tradition of transhumance. Nomadic livestock farmers depend on this delicately calibrated environment. Did you know? The Richtersveld boasts 29 lichen species - more than any other single place in the world. The Richtersveld World Heritage Site is massive, sprawling over 162 000 hectares. But there are times when you can hardly move further than a few metres with your camera. A tiny pelargonium in a little hollow, a group of indomitable yellow flowers, a few weirdly-shaped butter-trees, luminous pink mesembs and yellow oxalis conspire to attract your eye and your camera. Strange little plants will intrigue you: Leaves that look like coins, leaves that look like stems, plants that move your soul
