The first golf course on the island of Zanzibar
has officially opened at Sea Cliff Spa and Resort
It is
official, the first ever golf course designed by Peter Matkovich at Sea Cliff
Spa and Resort on the majestic island of Zanzibar is now formally open to the
public. After undergoing some finishing touches and minor setbacks due to
unexpected heavy rainfall, the course is now in full swing and is set to
provide a world-class golfing experience to tourists and Zanzibar residents.
The course
was declared open at the launch which took place on the 8th of
February 2014 by the Minister of the State President’s Office of the
Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Dr. Mwinyi Haji Makame.
The launch
was a tremendous success and was attended by 100 guests, 60 of which
participated in a round of golf. “All the guests and players were
pleasantly surprised and astonished with the quality of the golf course and the
club house,” explains Diana Howell Marketing Manager of Sea Cliff Spa and
Resort.
Professional
South African golfer, Dale Hayes was the master of ceremonies and got the event
off to a great start. Hayes had this to say about Sea Cliff Spa and
Resort “the views are spectacular, the rooms are beautifully appointed, the
food is fantastic and the swimming pools are amazing – what a place to get away
and unwind, and now you can pay golf too!” Thoroughly impressed with the
design of the course, Hayes empahsised that Peter Matkovich’s designs are
always unique. “Once again Peter Matkovich and his team have come up with
a jewel that’s both fun to play and beautiful.”
Designed to
encapsulate the beauty of Zanzibar, the 9 hole, 13 tee golf course does just
that. “The social impact that the course has had on residents in the
immediate vicinity has been tremendous and providing them with the opportunity
to become specialist golfers has been a true highlight,” explained Peter
Matkovich during his speech at the launch. Matkovich also expressed his
gratitude to the Chairman for his confidence in allowing them to develop a golf
course.
The warm
weather on the day of the launch was accompanied by a pleasant breeze easing
the harshness of the heat, making the transition from day to early evening
magnificent and enjoyable. The Gala Dinner and prize giving at the newly
renovated club house overlooking the ocean added to a breathtaking
ambiance. First prize winners received a personalised replica dhow which
was engraved at the dinner displaying the occasion, the date and their
name.
“We are
hoping that the golf course will continue to encourage Zanzibar locals to grow
the island’s golfing community. We are running an opening special until
the end of March for $100 which includes green fees, golf car and golf club
rentals,” concludes Howell.
