Hangout Jozi is a premier city bar, braai-eatery,
deli-foodhall and events venue situated along the Joziburg Lane. It is also the
home of JoburgPlaces inner-city tours and explorations. Hangout Jozi provides a
lounge space to inner-city residents and office workers – and in turn, to
travellers keen to mingle with locals. Hangout Jozi is all about experiencing
the mesmerising real Joburg.
Hangout Jozi is open to the public on Friday, Saturday and
Sunday afternoon and evenings. We are also open on public holidays and for
special events. Scroll to bottom of this page for our list of upcoming parties
and activations.
Hidden behind erstwhile industrial properties, in a precinct of buildings being refurbished, is an emerging network of pedestrian lanes and public spaces, fast becoming known as the Joziburg Lane. Running along the side of the One Eloff building, the Joziburg Lane is flanked by lifestyle, retail, and food and entertainment businesses. An entire mall, opening up to the lane, is also currently under construction. All in all this is the offering of the Molten Black lifestyle – a re-imagined inner-city precinct of residential rental apartments, complemented by public spaces and retail areas.
The story of the Joziburg Lane starts in the 1950s when this particular part of the city was redeveloped as Motortown – the home of Chrysler, Rolls Royce and many other car showrooms and distributors. As was the case with the rest of the Johannesburg inner-city, the area fell into decline from the late 1980s onward and regeneration only got underway in recent years when Molten Black started the refurbishment of the colossal One Eloff building – the blue-and-yellow landmark on the southern edge of town.
Prominent along the Joziburg Lane is Hangout Jozi – a premier bar, braai-eatery, deli-foodhall and events space. Other attractions include Zaris Espresso Bar, Oliver & Rihlampfu Artist Studio, Noni’s Food, The Nut Crunch and Africa Wonderful Embroidery. Studios of other prominent artists such as Hannelie Coetzee, Fiver Locker and Manuela Karin Knaut, as well as Shayne Robinson’s Jozi Studios (photography) overlook the lane.
The Joziburg Lane is also proud to be the home of JoburgPlaces – one of the city’s foremost walking tour operators, operating from inside Hangout Jozi.
