A South African
Art and Food Pairing
The opening of the Anton Smit art exhibition at The Menlyn
Boutique Hotel which took place on the 16th of April was well
attended, witnessing the first ever South African art and food pairing.
Several of Smit’s art works were paired with decadent canapés created by
talented Head Chef Pellie Grobler of The Black Bamboo, The Menlyn Boutique
Hotel’s signature restaurant.
The inspirational sculptor will be showcasing his finest
works from the past 40 years in an exhibition called ‘In Retrospect’ at various
locations of the exquisite hotel. Encompassing themes of suffering,
reconciliation, glory and sublimation, it is easy to see why Smit is an
acclaimed South Africa artist.
On the art & food pairing Pellie Grobler explained
“incorporating and translating these themes into the food was extremely
challenging. Art is not tangible and is based on personal
preference. Everyone interprets art differently and it was about
portraying the true meaning behind the artwork into the food that I found
difficult. The preparation for the art and food pairing was a work in
progress and was well thought out. Whilst some pieces I related to immediately
made it easy to create a dish that connected with the art, others took some time
making it a trying process.” Thoroughly enjoyed by guests, the art and
food pairing was a huge success.
Background music performed by folk band Georgetown added to
the ambience as guests perused the hotel appreciating the sculptures on
display. The night ended in an auction to raise funds for non-profit
children’s home Tshwane Haven and started with the auctioning of a bottle of
Johnny Walker Blue Label premium edition which was donated by The Menlyn
Boutique Hotel and was sold at R 4 000.00. In addition, the hotel in
conjunction with Anton Smit auctioned one of Smit’s sculptures ‘Millennium’
which was sold at R 24 500.00.
If you were unable to attend the opening night, make sure
that you pencil a day in your diary in the next three months to visit The Menlyn
Boutique Hotel to see some of Smit’s most magnificent and popular pieces.
