The Menlyn Boutique Hotel Art Exhibition

The Menlyn Boutique Hotel is proud to be hosting an Anton Smit Art Exhibition ‘In Retrospect’, from the 16th April 2015. The hotel will be home to Anton Smit’s finest work from the past 40 years and is an acknowledgment to the artist who has successfully become one of South Africa’s most inspirational sculptors.

Smit, whose work is well-known for its evoking themes of suffering, reconciliation, glory and sublimation, was inspired as a young artist, where he had encountered many challenges, but his success can be attributed to his courage and determination to forge ahead in the face of great difficulty. Completely self-taught, Smit has since gone on to exhibit in places like Rome, Milan, New York and Hong Kong and has his work permanently displayed in the Pretoria and Pietersburg Art Museum. He is known as one of South Africa’s most important artists and continues to contribute to the countries cultural heritage.

The Menlyn Boutique Hotel, which already boasts several of Smit’s unique artworks,  are thrilled to be hosting this art exhibition as they have long appreciated the sculptors work.  Smit is equally delighted to be showcasing his artwork at such a prime location.  Therefore in celebration of the three month exhibition, The Menlyn Boutique Hotel will be hosting a one of a kind food and art pairing on the opening night.

The night will include a speech from the sculptor himself and will be followed by an auction of one of his art works in order to raise funds for Tshwane Haven, a non-profit organisation that looks after children with special medical needs.

Undoubtedly the food and art pairing is an event in itself and Head Chef Pellie Grobler of The Black Bamboo, The Menlyn Boutique Hotel’s signature restaurant, is working on some exceptional creations for the opening event.  “My idea is to focus on the past 40 years, by bringing in elements of colour from the art into the food.  Anton’s work evokes emotion and my hope is to translate this into the food,” Grobler explains.

The three month art exhibition will offer art enthusiasts the opportunity to view Smit’s fantastic art collection.  The opening night is open to the public and art enthusiasts however space is limited.  To secure your booking for the art and food pairing contact Andile on 086 100 7387 or events@menlynhotel.com
