Waterberg Extreme
Mountain Bike Charity Challenge
An Introduction
The purpose of The Waterberg Charity Bike
Challenge is to raise funds for two privately funded non-profit organisations
in the Waterberg region: The Waterberg Welfare Society and the Waterberg
Academy Educational Trust. The two organisations are described later in
this document. The Bike Challenge will cover a distance of approx. 250km over 8
days.
The Waterberg region is a generally
underprivileged area in the North of South Africa. The region is also one of
the most scenic and exciting areas of the country and ideally suited for an
introduction to African life, its wonderful people and fascinating wildlife.
To explore this region by bike will be an exceptional
and unique adventure.
Participating in the Bike Challenge will also be
an important and hugely appreciated opportunity to help secure the continued
work of two vital community activities in the Waterberg region.
Fast Facts
This is not a race, it is a charity challenge
organised by local volunteers in the Waterberg area. The organisers are
primarily involved as volunteers for the Waterberg Welfare Society and the
Waterberg Academy Educational Trust.
The concept is simply that anyone (who can ride
a bike!) is welcome to participate, funded by sponsorship or their own
donations. In return you will be part of an unforgettable experience in the
South African wilderness.
The total length of the Bike Challenge is 250 km
in varied and beautiful scenic mountain terrain.
The minimum sponsorship or donation is £3500pp
(R 60,000). Sponsorship money raised
over the required minimum will be split equally between the two charities.
All funds (beyond direct expenses) go to The
Waterberg Welfare Society and The Waterberg Academy Educational Trust.
The participants will be divided into groups
according to ability and fitness. The groups will be led by highly skilled and
knowledgeable guides.
Accommodation will be in tents and meals will be
picnic-style lunches and fire-side dinners prepared by local chefs.
At the end of the Bike Challenge it is
recommended that you extend your stay in South Africa for a few days – the
organisers of the Challenge will be happy to provide free advice regarding your
onward travel.
