Located off the south eastern coast of Africa, Mauritius is a tropical hideaway renowned for its beauty. This little bit of heaven on Earth was formed approximately 10 million years ago during a volcanic eruption under the sea. Known for its soft, sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and reefs that expand around the island’s 205 miles of coastline.
Mauritius was first discovered by the Arabs, since it is situated in their trading routes, but the first settlers of Mauritius were the Portuguese, and then after that the Dutch. Mauritius was named by the Dutch, after the Prince Maurice Nassau. The island was developed by the French in 1710, after they came to settle on the island. The last colony to possess Mauritius was the British.

Mauritius is a country with a rich history. It has been hallowed by important organizations like the UNESCO. In fact, ‘Le Morne’ has been identified as a “place of resistance to slavery” and the Aapravasi Ghat, is considered as a “symbolic space of indentured labour” (specifically related to the coolie trade). These distinctions make the island unique; Mauritius is the only country in the world where two sites have been dedicated to this harsh side of cultural history.
The island is also a melting-pot of different cultures and beliefs. The population of Mauritius is composed of Indians, Muslims, Chinese and Creole. With all these different cultures, Mauritius celebrates a variety of different religious celebrations and customs, and has a wide range of ethnic cuisine.


Sega is a local form of song and dance, which originated from the African slaves which were brought to the island. It has now become a trade mark of the culture of the island among tourists, which they expect to see when coming to the island.
Water activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling would never cease to amaze visitors. Fishing, sailing, kayaking, water skiing and surfing are also very popular among tourists.
Visitors will be mesmerized by the sunset and starlight cruises which are meant for relaxation. Paragliding is an excellent way to enjoy the breathtaking views. The beaches are fabulous for sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing.
For bird lovers, bird watching is a highlight at the Casela Bird Park which encompasses a 20-acre stretch of parkland near the Black River District. The park is swamped with rare and exotic birds. A visit to Souillac offers a picturesque view of verdant gardens overlooking the sea.
Mauritius is a home to some of the best spas offering marvelous therapy for the well-being of both body and mind. The island is also renowned for its magnificent golf courses more precisely at Belle Mare Plage, Le Telfair, Tamassa and Le Touessrok.
Mark Twain, in 1897, after his trip to Mauritius even said “God created Mauritius first and then paradise was copied after it.” Indeed, Mauritius gives the gift of a perfect getawayfor your holidays!
