CINEMA NOUVEAU ANNOUNCES THE EXCLUSIVE RELEASE OF MR
MORGAN’S LAST LOVE, STARRING MICHAEL CAINE
He's a widower in
Paris who speaks no French; she's a dance instructor less than half his age.
Can they become a family, or will his estranged adult children halt the
friendship?
A chance encounter on a bus
in a suburb of Paris leads to the start of an interesting relationship between
two teachers – one is a retired American professor of philosophy, while the
other teaches the cha-cha at a small dance school in the city.
Adapted from Françoise
Dorner's novel La Douceur Assassine and directed by Sandra Nettelbeck, Mr
Morgan’s Last Love stars Michael Caine as Matthew Morgan, recently
widowed, and living out his last years in the beautiful city of Paris. His
young and engaging friend, Pauline (Clémence Poésy), encourages him to venture
out of the gloom of his Paris apartment and into her dance studio.
This comedy drama focuses on
the former philosophy professor who had moved to the ‘City of Lights’ with his
wife, Joan (Jane Alexander), to live out their golden years together. However,
three years after her death, Matthew still catches glimpses of her in all the
old familiar places they had loved visiting together – although it is he who
seems to be the one who has taken to walking around Paris like a ghost of his
former self.
However, all this changes
when he meets Pauline. Her hair reminds him of his late wife's, he says; his
beard reminds her of her late father's. She is also a solitary person but longs
for the connection of family. She believes she's found that in Matthew. Soon
enough, he's dancing the cha-cha-cha in her class and literally letting some
light into his musty apartment, as he finds himself falling for this beautiful,
but much younger woman. But, do these two odd characters really have anything
in common?
Pauline is at his bedside,
attending to him during a hospitalisation, when his two adult children arrive
from the USA to check on their father. Matthew’s son, Miles (Justin Kirk), and
his daughter, Karen (Gillian Anderson), are not sure what to make of this
strange relationship. They are convinced Pauline is a gold digger and only
after one thing. Pauline, on the other hand, is confounded by the tangible
distance between father and children. When Karen heads home to deal with her
own family’s problems, Miles remains in Paris, but is there any way that
Pauline can fit in to the strained family dynamics?
Mr Morgan’s Last Love releases exclusively at Cinema Nouveau theatres in
Johannesburg (Rosebank Mall), Pretoria (Brooklyn Mall), Durban (Gateway) and
